Education
Abilene is home to three religious universities: Abilene Christian University; Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University.
The city's more than 10,000 student population is supplemented by Texas State Technical College and the Abilene Education Center of Cisco Junior College. Texas Tech University opened the Center for Excellence in Engineering Graduate Studies and Research in 2002.
The Abilene public school system ranks approximately 32nd in the state of Texas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 115,930 people, 41,570 households, and 28,101 families residing in the city. The following numbers represent percents of population: 20 years old and under, 32 percent; 21 to 34, 23 percent; 35 to 54, 25 percent and 55 and older, 20 percent.
