Life in Abilene
Abilene is considered one of the best places to raise a family in all the United States, according to a report issued in June 2006. The report, ''Best Places to Raise Your Family: The Top Affordable Communities in the U.S.'' was written by Bert Sperling and Peter Sander in which the duo claims Abilene to be a classic, small western town located at the gateway to the large, expanse known as West Texas.
The city was chosen one of the best based on standard of living, education, health and safety and lifestyle. According to the report, Abilene ranked first in the Best Small Town Feel, Best for a Country Feel and Best for Sun Gods & Goddesses categories.
The report cited Abilene's cost of living as extremely attractive to young families and among the lowest in U.S. metro areas. Other highlights mentioned were the local recreation and arts offerings.
The drawbacks to living in Abilene, however, were its isolated location, summer heat and lack of career opportunities.
